DETROIT (WWJ) - Two former Wayne County Roads Division employees face larceny charges after allegedly stealing county funds while they were working there.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged 64-year-old Kevin Gunn of West Bloomfield and 32-year-old Jasmine Bass of Westland with one count each of Larceny over $1000 but less than $20,000. It is alleged they stole over $4000 in county funds.

Allegedly, on December 5 pf last year, Gunn diverted county workers who were paid overtime and took county owned building materials to build out Bass’s Romulus store, Romulus Nutrition. Romulus Nutrition is not a Wayne County enterprise.

Gunn was Bass's supervisor when she worked in the Wayne County Roads Division in the Bridges Department.

“Public servants dedicate their lives working hard to serve the public. The defendants in this case betrayed public trust by allegedly stealing for personal gain. Hopefully, this case will send a message that this conduct will never be accepted in Wayne County,” said Prosecutor Worthy.

The charges stem from an anonymous letter that the Office of the Wayne County Executive sent the Prosecutor's Office on March 24, 2022. The letter reported misuse of taxpayer dollars at the Wayne County Roads Division in connection with Romulus Nutrition.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, assisted by the FBI, conducted an investigation. The investigation led to the current state charges against Gunn and Bass.

An update will be sent with the arrangements that are being made for Defendants Gunn and Bass to turn themselves in for processing and arraignment in 34th District Court in Romulus.

Gunn has also been charged in a federal indictment based upon separate facts and allegations. Gunn previously engaged in a scheme to use taxpayer dollars to make unauthorized purchases of generators and other power equipment from retailers in southeast Michigan which were sold for personal profit.

Gunn pleaded guilty to these charges in January and is awaiting sentence.
