ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Two men are recovering from non-life threatening injuries after they exchanged gunfire at a memorial vigil in Ann Arbor on Friday night, police said.
The Ann Arbor Police Department said officers were dispatched to an area in the 800 block of S. Maple after receiving reports of shots fired around 8:30 p.m.
When police arrived at the scene, they found a large crowd had gathered for a memorial vigil in the area when multiple shots rang out, injuring two men.
Based on their preliminary investigation, police said an armed 25-year-old man approached the group and began firing off his weapon. A 24-year-old Ann Arbor man then returned fire.
Both men were struck in the exchange.
Officers were able to locate the 24-year-old man at the scene, who sustained a single gunshot wound to his left foot. The 25-year-old man took himself to the University of Michigan hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds to his left wrist and bicep.
The pair received medical care for their injuries, which Ann Arbor police said were non-life threatening.
The department said a stray bullet also managed to enter a home on the 2500 block of Bens Drive during the firefight and traveled into the kitchen where a family was having dinner.
No one was injured inside the home, police added, and no others were hurt at the vigil.
The department added that the investigation remains ongoing with further details to be released at a later time. Detectives have determined the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public at this time.
