SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) — Police are asking for witnesses to a deadly crash in Shelby Township Thursday afternoon to come forward.
A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the crash, which claimed the lives of two women, ages 88 and 63.
The crash happened shortly before 1 p.m. on southbound M-53 near 22 Mile Road, according to the Shelby Township Police Department.
The at-fault driver was headed south on M-53 when he rear-ended multiple vehicles near the construction zone. The man was taken to the hospital and is under arrest for two counts of a moving violation causing death.
Both women were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities are not being released at this time.

The crash left M-53 closed for about five hours.
Tipster Brian, passing by, told WWJ he saw two cars "cut in half" and a box truck in the median.
Jacqueline VanHaaren Check wrote on the police department's Facebook page: "I was heading north and passed before emergency showed up. Someone was pulling people from the wreckage. Looked really bad."
Another witness said he saw a paramedic administering CPR.
No other details surrounding the crash have been released.
