DETROIT (WWJ) - One man and one woman were saved by Detroit firefighters after a fire broke out in their nearly 100-year-old Palmer Woods home Friday morning.

Fire officials said the couple was rescued from the upper floor of their classic 1924 English Tudor style home, which is estimated to span over 3,500 square feet.

Fire Chief David Webster with the Detroit Fire Department’s 8th Battalion told WWJ’s Mike Campbell that the sheer size of the home proved challenging for fire crews.

“Smoke coming out everywhere,” he told Campbell. “Flames were on the first and second floor on the east side of the building where the kitchen and the garage were at.”

Campbell said the couple's pets were in the home at the time of the fire. One dog perished in the flames while the second dog is believed to have escaped -- that dog is currently missing.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, it is believed it started in the kitchen.

Campbell said the four-bedroom, four-bath home is still standing after firefighters extinguished the flames, but much work is ahead to restore the home to its former glory.

"The couple sitting on a stretcher from the EMS rig just holding each other, looking at their home and perhaps thinking how they will rebuild," Campbell reported. "But at least they have their lives thanks to the Detroit Fire Department."
