DETROIT (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police say drunken driving is suspected in a crash that shut down I-94 in Detroit, early in the morning on Labor Day.

Shortly before 3 a.m. on Sept. 1, police said calls came in about a crash along eastbound I-94 near Barret Street.

When MSP troopers arrived, they closed the freeway for an investigation.

According to police, driver of a Ford Flex was headed eastbound on the freeway when he lost control and crashed into the center media. The car then went across all lanes before hitting the concrete wall and coming to a stop, blocking the right and center lanes.

The driver of a Ford Fusion couldn't stop in time and crashed into the Flex, police said.

The Flex driver, a 33-year-old man, was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The driver of the Fusion was also taken to the hospital, but police said he had non-life-threatening injuries.

No one else was hurt.

The freeway was closed for several hours following the crash, but reopened at around 7:30 a.m.

MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said police were working to get a warrant for a blood draw to confirm whether the Flex driver was impaired.

“Another preventable crash,” Shaw said, in a statement. “We continue seeing drivers make poor decisions and get behind the wheel impaired. With so many options available to get home, driving impaired is irresponsible and puts so many people in danger.”
