'We're looking at this as a tragic accident' Detroit police say, after 2-year-old girl is run over by car driven by her father

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A 2-year-old girl died in Detroit on Sunday after investigators say she run over by a car by her own father.

Detroit Police said she was hit shortly after 5:30 p.m. on McDougall near Victoria Ave., and the family called 911.

"We're looking at this as a tragic accident," said Captain Derrick Griffin, who told reporters the child was being held by a sibling before she ran out into the street

"The father was in a vehicle preparing to pull off, so at this time it appears to be an accident," Griffin said. "Final information, once the investigation has concluded, further will be reported out."

Griffin said the child she was rushed by police officers to Children's Hospital and was first listed in critical condition. However, she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

"Children are our most precious citizens of the city, so this is a tragedy for the family and it's a tragedy for the city. So our hearts and our condolences go out to this family, and to this community," Griffin said.

Griffin said both the DPD Fatal Squad and the Child Abuse Unit we involved in the ongoing investigation.

The child's name was not released.
