(WWJ) Nearly one-third of all car crashes — and about 30% of fatal ones — happen at intersections.
With this in mind, Michigan Auto Law had released its annual list of the Top 20 Most Dangerous Intersections in Michigan, pointing out where drivers need to be extra cautious.
The report analyzed official Michigan State Police crash data from 2025, looking at accidents within 200 feet of signalized intersections, four-way stops, roundabouts, freeway ramps, and divided highways.
Michigan's Top 20 Most Dangerous Intersections
1. 18 1/2 Mile Rd at Van Dyke Ave (Sterling Heights) – Roundabout
- 2025 Totals: 210 Crashes | 12 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes jumped 29.6% from 162 in 2024. Total crashes in previous years were 135 in 2023, 118 in 2022, 168 in 2021, 131 in 2020, and 229 in 2019. Injuries remained unchanged from 2024.
2. 11 Mile Rd / I-696 at Van Dyke Ave (Warren / Center Line)
- 2025 Totals: 180 Crashes | 33 Injuries | 1 Fatality
- Trend: Total crashes dropped 2.7% from 185 in 2024. Previous totals were 218 in 2023, 207 in 2022, 173 in 2021, 124 in 2020, and 129 in 2019. Injuries increased by 26.9% from 26 in 2024.
3. Telegraph Rd at 12 Mile Rd (Southfield)
- 2025 Totals: 121 Crashes | 28 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes rose 14.1% from 106 in 2024. Previous totals were 99 in 2023, 110 in 2022, 95 in 2021, 88 in 2020, 128 in 2019, and 145 in 2018. Injuries grew 21.7% from 23 in 2024.
4. Orchard Lake Rd at 14 Mile Rd (Farmington Hills) – Roundabout
- 2025 Totals: 118 Crashes | 9 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes increased 8.2% from 109 in 2024. Previous totals were 132 in 2023, 122 in 2021, 89 in 2020, 178 in 2019, and 144 in 2018. Injuries went up from 5 in 2024.
5. Martin Pkwy at N Pontiac Trl (Commerce Twp) – Roundabout
- 2025 Totals: 107 Crashes | 9 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Oakland County's largest roundabout saw total crashes fall 29.1% from 151 in 2024. Previous totals were 160 in 2023, 126 in 2022, 140 in 2021, 110 in 2020, and 161 in 2019. Injuries remained the same as 2024.
6. State Rd at W Ellsworth Rd (Ann Arbor) – Roundabout
- 2025 Totals: 93 Crashes | 5 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes increased from 85 in 2024.
7. 12 Mile Rd at I-94 (St. Clair Shores)
- 2025 Totals: 86 Crashes | 21 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes increased from 75 in 2024, and injuries rose from 11.
8. N Hamilton St at Washtenaw Ave (Ypsilanti)
- 2025 Totals: 85 Crashes | 8 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes dropped significantly from 132 in 2024.
9. Schoolcraft Rd at Telegraph Rd (Redford Twp)
- 2025 Totals: 84 Crashes | 18 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes dropped from 137 in 2024, and injuries fell from 26.
10. Telegraph Rd at Maple Rd (Bloomfield Township)
- 2025 Totals: 83 Crashes | 47 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: New to the Top 20 list. Total crashes rose from 59 in 2024, and injuries jumped from 22.
11. Lee Rd at Whitmore Lake Rd (Green Oak Township) – West Roundabout
- 2025 Totals: 82 Crashes | 2 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes rose slightly from 80 in 2024, while injuries dropped from 3.
12. Southfield Rd at W 11 Mile Rd (Lathrup Village)
- 2025 Totals: 81 Crashes | 23 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes rose from 76 in 2024, but injuries dropped from 38.
13. US-131 at Wealthy St (Grand Rapids)
- 2025 Totals: 78 Crashes | 21 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes rose from 73 in 2024, and injuries increased from 12.
14. Hall Rd at Schoenherr (Sterling Heights)
- 2025 Totals: 78 Crashes | 14 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes increased from 76 in 2024, and injuries rose from 11.
15. Metropolitan Pkwy at Van Dyke Ave (Sterling Heights)
- 2025 Totals: 77 Crashes | 21 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes climbed from 54 in 2024, while injuries dropped from 16.
16. Burton St SW at US-131 (Grand Rapids)
- 2025 Totals: 76 Crashes | 11 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes increased from 64 in 2024, while injuries fell from 17.
17. Dix Ave at M-39 (Lincoln Park)
- 2025 Totals: 75 Crashes | 23 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes decreased from 68 in 2024, but injuries went up from 22.
18. I-96 at Milford Rd (Lyon Township)
- 2025 Totals: 70 Crashes | 6 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes saw a major increase from 29 in 2024, and injuries rose from 5.
19. 23 Mile Rd at M-53 (Shelby Township)
- 2025 Totals: 69 Crashes | 14 Injuries | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes increased from 43 in 2024, and injuries rose from 10.
20. Oakley Park Rd at Martin Pkwy (Commerce Township)
- 2025 Totals: 69 Crashes | 1 Injury | 0 Fatalities
- Trend: Total crashes remained identical to 2024, while injuries decreased from 5.
So, why do so many crashes happen in these spots?
Researchers say heavy traffic, busy commercial strips, and freeway access points are major factors. Common causes include running red lights, failing to yield, speeding, distracted driving, and making improper left turns.
"Even when a crash doesn't result in an injury, it can have a significant impact on a driver and their family," said Steve Gursten, President and Attorney at Michigan Auto Law. "We hope this annual list encourages Michigan drivers to slow down, remain alert, and take extra precautions when traveling through these areas."
