CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) -- The body of a 21-year-old jet skier has been recovered Friday, after his watercraft capsized on Lake St. Clair.
The Chesterfield Township Fire Dept. said Friday morning that crews were currently on the water to look for missing Chesterfield Twp. resident Jonathan Kloss, 21, and were preparing a smaller boat to search closer to the shoreline.
According to police, Kloss and his friend, 19-year-old Hunter Lentine of New Baltimore, rode their jet skies out into Lake St. Clair's Anchor Bay from the boat launch at Brandenburg Park located at 50050 Jefferson Ave. in Chesterfield Township on Thursday.
The pair were due back by 7 p.m., but failed to return, prompting an immediate response. Chesterfield Twp. police said they received assistance from the Chesterfield Twp. Fire Dept., Ira Twp. Marine Rescue, Border Patrol, Algonac City Marine Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard, Macomb County Sheriff Dept. Marine Division and the Michigan State Police.
Police said the men's two jet skies were found — one unmanned and one capsized, floating in Anchor Bay not far from Brandenburg Park.
Lentine was spotted and rescued from the water.
He was taken to a local hospital for treatment -- his condition was not released.
The USCG said in an earlier social media post that they, along with a partner agency, spent five hours covering 88 square miles with no sightings of Kloss.
Just after 12 p.m. Friday, the Chesterfield Township Polcie Department said the young man's body was found by the Macomb County Sheriff Marine Division near the area where the jet Ski capsized in the bay Thursday night. "The Kloss family is grieving the loss of Jonathan," police added, in a news release.
WWJ Newsradio 950 has learned that Kloss was known for his work as a podcast host and producer, including on the popular Detroit Tigers podcast Motor City Metrics.
Officials said the men were not wearing life jackets.
