MECOSTA COUNTY (WWJ) A young inmate died after he escaped a moving transport van on US-127 in Central Michigan.

The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office said, on Thursday (October 24th) around 7:40 a.m., their deputies were transporting a prisoner to the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) in Jackson. While in Gratiot County, he escaped out of the rear compartment of the moving transport vehicle onto US-127 and sustained “life-threatening injuries.”

He died at the hospital on Sunday.

The inmate— Tylor Ormsbee, 25 of Kalamazoo— had been sentenced to MDOC for a probation violation. MDOC records show a judge had previously sentenced him to a maximum of two years in prison on charges of Assaulting, Resisting or Obstructing a Police Officer—during an incident that happened in December of 2019. His discharge date was October 21st, 2024.

FOX-17 WXMI reported that Ormsbee was hit by a car on the highway after he got out of the transport vehicle and ended up on life support. However, the sheriff's office did not confirm how he sustained his life-threatening injuries.

“Please keep Tylor Ormsbee’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the sheriff's office said in their press release.

Michigan State Police are conducting the criminal investigation—and the sheriff’s office said they will release further information upon its completion. The Michigan Sheriff’s Association Mission Team has already completed the internal investigation.
