(WWJ) -- After a drop in holiday travel last year, 2021 is rebounding with strong numbers as people head out to visit family and friends.

According to data from AAA, around 3.3 million Michiganders are expected to hit the road or take to the skies during this holiday season, which is nearly 10 percent fewer than the record-high set in 2019, but a 34 percent increase from 2020.

Nationwide, more than 109 million Americans are expected to travel. This is a "dramatic bounce-back" from 2020, with 27.7 million more travelers than last year during the same period.

Road trips remain the most popular option, and data shows over 100 million people across the country are planning to drive to their destinations, with most traveling 50 miles or more.

In fact, a survey from Cars.com says around 20 percent of travelers who booked flights for the season have canceled them and plan to hit the road instead due to concerns over COVID-19.

Still, air travel has received a significant boost from last year, increasing by a whopping 184 percent with six million people expected to fly nationwide.

In metro Detroit, 1.2 million people will reportedly come through Detroit Metro Airport from Dec. 23 through the New Year.

Top travel destinations across the U.S. this holiday season include theme park-heavy areas cities as Orlando and Anaheim, followed by Las Vegas, New York and Maui.
