(WWJ) Forecasters are warning of dangerous conditions for Lake Michigan beach-goers, Thursday afternoon into Friday evening.

The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids says waves as high as 2 to 3 feet are expected Thursday morning, then getting even bigger later Thursday into Friday.

For an area spanning from Manistee, down through Muskegon and Grand Haven and south to St. Joseph, NWS said waves would increase to 3 to 5 feet, with peak wave heights expected Friday, along with dangerous currents.

A map tweeted by NWS showed a large portion of this region under a red "Do Not Swim" advisory, with 'Use Caution' posted for other areas.

During this time, NWS said all Lake Michigan beaches would be impacted by north-northwest winds from 15 to 20 mph.

This comes as a storm system is headed into Michigan, with scattered severe storms possible Thursday afternoon/evening in West Michigan, and the best chances near and east of US-127, NWS said. Damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall remain the greatest threats, although a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.

In the Metro Detroit area, AccuWeather was calling for similar conditions, with flash flooding, large hail, damaging winds and a tornado all on the table on Thursday.
