DETROIT (WWJ) – Four people are recovering after they had to be rescued from the Detroit River when their fishing boat capsized near the Gordie Howe Bridge.
It happened around 4:30 p.m. Thursday when 2-to-4-foot waves overtook their boat, according to Coast Guard Lt. Adeeb Amad.
Crews on a Coast Guard safety boat sitting under the bridge project to protect construction workers jumped into action to rescue the fishers, according to Amad.
All four aboard the capsized boat were treated for “minor hypothermia,” as the water was around 45 degrees, Amad said. None of them had to be hospitalized and no other injuries were reported.
Amad said the size of the boat is not clear, but a number of factors could have been at play that caused the waves to come over the front of their boat.
No other details surrounding the incident have been released, including the ages and hometowns of the fishers.
