DETROIT (WWJ)-- A 4-year-old girl is hospitalized in critical condition after she was struck by a car while crossing the street on Detroit's east side.

Detroit Police said it happened on Saturday, August 9, around 5:30 p.m. on Canyon Street, in the area of Mack and Moross.

According authorities; she looked both ways before crossing Canyon Street. She was on her way from Balduck Park to a family party on the other side of the road when the car struck her.

Detroit Police Captain Scott Pellerito urged parents to be vigilant.

"If you have young kids, especially a 4-year-old and they're running around at a park, that's great. That's what you want. We want to enjoy family time, but you have to keep an on your kids and make sure they get across the street," he said.

Pellerito said they have no information on whether her parents or other responsible adults were watching her at the time.

According to police, first responders arrived on the scene within three minutes and rushed her to the hospital.

She has injuries to her neck, chest and leg, police said.

Witnesses told police the driver appeared to be driving at approximately the speed limit of 25 miles per hour. The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, police said.

"Such a tragic situation whenever we have children injured...we've seen an uptick in that," Pellerito told WWJ. "From what we've gathered from the scene, at least preliminarily, this just looks like a tragic accident."
