DEARBORN (WWJ) - A group of teens wound up behind bars instead of celebrating the Fourth of July after they allegedly aimed and set off fireworks at cars and cops in Dearborn.

Cpl. Dan Bartok with the Dearborn Police Department told WWJ's Charlie Langton that five people total were arrested overnight, but only two of them will face felony charges in the "serious situation."

Bartok said the suspects were causing chaos near Fordson High School off Ford Road just after 11 p.m. on July 4th.

"Some juveniles started to light fireworks and have those fireworks exploding near vehicles that were traveling on Ford Road," Bartok explained. "Our police officers quickly responded to that area and started investigating the scene and while our officers were on scene investigating and interviewing and determining what happened, we actually had officers have fireworks, mortars aimed and thrown at our patrol cars and officers."

Bartok said there were no injuries stemming from the incdeint, but there was damage to one patrol car.

After the encounter, it was reported by TCD on social media that the group scattered and ran off to hide in a neighbor's backyard. The neighbor noticed the teens and contacted police to report the suspicious activity.

TCD noted that when the cops arrived to the property, the two suspects tried to assault authorities. Video of the incident posted by TCD shows a struggle on the sidewalk in front of homes and multiple shouts to "stop."

Bartok confirmed five people were taken into custody, but the two teens, which were said to be adults, were arrested for assault and battery on a police officer, resisting and opposing a police officer, possession of a explosive device and destruction of police property.

And that's not all. Bartok said the suspects could still be slapped with additional charges on top of that.

"The Dearborn Police Department has a zero-tolerance policy for any illegal use of fireworks or any kind of situation where the fireworks are being used where the public is in danger or if fireworks are used to endanger any of our officers," Bartok stated. "This incident last night could have injured civilians or could have injured some of our officers. Thankfully, that did not happen."

According to Bartok, an investigation into the incident remains ongoing, but he praised the quick work of officers involved in the case.

"Our officers did a fantastic job and responded extremely quickly, tried to mitigate the situation and they identified individuals that are involved, Now our investigative division and our detectives are working the case. They are looking for and will be hopefully identifying any other suspects that were involved in these incidents going forward."

Bartok added that there were also several curfew violations, loitering violations and fireworks violations that occurred overnight that were all related to this incident.
