5-day-old infant reportedly mauled by dog at a home in Novi

NOVI (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway after Novi Police, where police say a 5-day old infant was killed by a family dog.

The Novi Police and Fire departments were called to the 42000 block of Liberte Drive at 8:28 a.m. Tuesday. The home is at the Oakland Glens, a mobile home community on 13 Mile Road between Novi and Meadowbrook roads.

The caller, reported to be a family member, told dispatchers there was an unresponsive infant in the home. Novi Police Commander Robert Manar said first responders found the baby girl with puncture wounds "consistent with an animal attack."

She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police haven't released any information on the breed or age of the dog, or who else was inside the home at the time.

Commander Manar did confirm that a dog was removed from the home.

Neighbors were stunned and saddened to hear what happened, including Michelle, who lives a few doors down.

"I'm praying for them, and parents, especially...It's just sad," she told WWJ's Darrylin Horne. "I think people need to keep an eye on their pets more, but it's just sad. It's a sad day in Oakland Glens today. That's for sure."
