DETROIT (WWJ) -- A former nurse is facing five additional charges related to the sexual assault of patients at a hospital in Detroit, and psychiatric clinic in Livonia.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced the new charges against 47-year old Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios of Wayne, Wednesday morning.
The first attack allegedly happened nearly five years ago at the Community Outreach for Psychiatric Emergencies office in Livonia. Four others involved patients at Sinai Grace Hospital and happened in 2024 and last year, according to investigators.
Worthy said investigators believe Berrios may have more victims.
"Imagine this: You are sitting in a hospital or clinic, waiting to find out what the heck is wrong with you —you're in pain, you're scared, and you're at your most vulnerable — when a trusted medical professional comes in to your aid," Worthy said. "You were supposed to be comforted and supported. The polar opposite happened in this case, and in the worst possible way."
Berrios had already been charged with sex assault in three cases stemming from alleged attacks that took place at Sinai Grace and in a porta-potty in downtown Detroit.
Sinai-Grace Hospital released the following statement:
“Sinai-Grace Hospital prioritizes the safety of our patients. The hospital has rigorous processes in place to screen applicants prior to employment. There was no indication of a concern during that process. We also have processes to identify and address patient safety issues and take appropriate action. Upon becoming aware of allegations against Mr. Berrios, Sinai-Grace proactively initiated contact with and notified law enforcement. The hospital also immediately suspended and ultimately terminated his employment. We do not condone any type of abuse and are cooperating fully with law enforcement. Federal privacy laws restrict us from sharing patient-specific information.”
Anyone who has been assaulted by the defendant is urged to report it police in the jurisdiction where the assault occurred. Victims can also call Avalon Healing Center for supportive services at 313-964-9701.
