STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- An elderly man is recovering, according to reports, after being randomly attacked while out for a walk in Macomb County.
Sterling Heights Police said this happened Tuesday morning on Riverland Drive, near the Clinton River Trail, between Van Dyke and Clinton River Roads.
At around 8 a.m. police said a 76-year-old resident went out for his morning walk when, near the Riverland Apartments, the suspect approached him and began making odd remarks. The victim was then punched and attacked with a knife by the suspect, reported to be a Shelby Township man in his early 30s.
As the victim tied to fight off his attacker, WXYZ-TV reports some Good Samaritans saw what was happening, called 911 and tried to distract the suspect until police arrived.
The suspect tried to run from officers, but he was chased down and arrested.
The victim was treated at a hospital for his injuries, including a minor stab wound to his shoulder, but he's expected to be okay.
As for a motive, police told WXYZ that it's believed that the suspect has mental health issues.
The investigation is ongoing.
The suspect's name was not immediately released, with expected charges pending.
