DETROIT (WWJ) -- An elderly Detroit man faces attempted murder and several more charges connected to a quadruple shooting at an east side apartment complex.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office on Thursday announced its case against 78-year old James Albert Britton.

Investigators said Britton and another man got into an argument at the Sheraton Place apartments, before Britton allegedly pulled out a gun and started shooting: hitting three people.

The 65-year old man he was arguing with was wounded, but was able to tackle Britton who was than shot by a 62-year-old woman who picked up his gun, according to investigators.

Police said two others who were shot were innocent bystanders and were not involved in the argument. They were a 64-year-old man with a gunshot graze to the cheek, and a 70-year-old woman who was shot in the ankle.

The 65-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his right armpit and abdomen, officials said.

Reporting from outside the apartment complex on E. Jefferson Ave., WWJ's Charlie Langton said the shooting was first believed to be over a loud barbeque party.

Later, Langton said residents told him the argument in fact stemmed from a love triangle, and not a noise complaint.

Britton has been charged with four counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, one count of Carrying a Concealed Weapon, one count of Carrying a Dangerous Weapon with Unlawful Intent, and six counts of Felony Firearm.

He was arraigned in 36th District Court Friday morning and ordered held on a $500,000 cash/surety bond, with a GPS tether and house arrest if he is released.

Britton will return to court in two weeks.
