INDEPENDENCE TWP. (WWJ) -- An early morning fire destroyed a large house in northern Oakland County on Thursday.
Independence Township firefighters were called to the 6,000 square-foot home on Forest Valley, not far from Pine Knob, at around 5 a.m., after neighbors heard a boom and called 911.
WWJ's Charlie Langton says efforts to put the fire out were hampered by a lack of water, as there are no fire hydrants in the neighborhood.
He said the house is a total loss.
"It's a two story house and the top floor collapsed into the basement, there's almost nothing left," Langton reported.
The Independence Township Fire Chief David Piche said crews from eight neighboring departments were called in to assist.
There was no one inside the home, and no injuries reported.
The family living at the home was out of town on vacation, according to authorities.
A fire investigator from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office was at the scene and will be working to determine what caused the fire.
Piche said they are looking into reports of a possible explosion.
