8-year-old girl killed, 12-year-old boy critically injured in car versus buggy crash in Southwest Michigan

The driver of the Ford was arrested for Operating Under the Influence of an Unknown Substance.

LAWRENCE, Mich. (WWJ) A buggy versus car crash in Southwest Michigan killed an 8-year-old girl and critically injured a 12-year-old boy.

Michigan State Police said the crash happened in Lawrence Township, about 30 miles west of Kalmazoo, on Wednesday, March 26, around 8 a.m.

In a social media post; they said a 31-year-old Mattawan woman driving a Ford SUV on CR 215, near 60th Avenue, rear-ended an Amish buggy with two children inside.

An 8-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy were rushed to the hospital, where the girl was pronounced dead. The boy is in critical condition, according to police.

The horse also died, police said.

Investigators told WWJ the driver of the Ford SUV was arrested for allegedly Operating Under the Influence of an Unknown Substance and is lodged at the country jail. Neither she nor her two passengers were hurt.

Michigan State Police continue to investigate the crash.
