(WWJ) An 8-year-old Southfield girl who police say was shot in the head by her older brother has died.
Gyasi Stribling, 20, has been charged with assault with intent to murder and in the case — but the assault charge is now expected to be amended to open murder.
The shooting happened last Sunday night at the family's home at the 12 North Apartments on 12 Mile Rd. near Telegraph Rd. The little girl was taken to a local hospital where she remained in critical condition until her death.
Southfield police chief Elvin Barren said at a news conference Thursday that the shooting does not appear to have been accidental.
As far as what exactly happened, he said the details are too "disturbing" to release.
"It's stressful for us," Barren said. "It's stressful for me to stand stand before you and control my emotions when you talk about an 8-year-old child. But we have a job to do. We have investigations that we have to ensure are thorough, they're complete, and we want to preserve this evidence because I do not want this individual released."
The chief also declined possible motive.
"This was a heinous crime," he added. "We're confident in this case that this person will serve time in prison."
Stribling is currently being held without bond in the Oakland County Jail.
The victim's name has not yet been released.
