BAY CITY (WWJ) - A young child is dead and another is being treated for burns and smoke inhalation after a Bay City home went up in flames early Wednesday morning.

The Bay City Department of Public Safety said units responded to a burning home in the 700 block of Germania Street around 12:15 a.m. on Sept. 13.

When first responders arrived at the home, they found the front of the building on fire with heavy smoke and learned people were possibly trapped inside.

"Firefighters immediately conducted a primary search of the residence, along with an aggressive fire attack," officials said in an update on the fire via social media "During these efforts an eight-year-old male was found deceased inside of the residence, all other occupants were found to have made it out of the structure and were accounted for."

Another young boy was rushed to a local hospital for burn and inhalation injuries.

Crews at the scene managed to extinguish the fire and conducted overhaul operations.

Fire officials couldn't say what caused the fire, but an investigation is underway with the Fire Marshal's office and the Michigan State Police

Public safety crews were assisted at the home by Bangor Township Fire Department, Monitor Township Fire Department and Portsmouth Township Fire Department.

The department said they remain "committed to excellence and we are dedicated to providing the best possible public safety services to citizens of Bay City and all the people visiting our community."
