DETROIT (WWJ) -- Charges are expected against at least one person in the case of a Detroit Public Schools student stabbed by another student — after the stabber's mother reportedly told her to do it.

The stabbing happened Wednesday morning at Gompers Elementary-Middle School on Detroit's west side.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Darrylin Horne reports a mother of an 8th grader at the school allegedly walked through a metal detector with a knife, and gave it to her daughter who used it to attack a classmate.

The mother of the student who was stabbed said child was stabbed in the head, back and arm, and was cut from her neck to her ear.

The young suspect and her mother were both arrested following the incident.

School administrators said they were planning a virtual meeting Thursday evening for all Gompers parents, to answer questions and provide updates.

The school won't reopen until Monday.

Meanwhile, the Wayne County Prosecutor Office said it is working on a charging decision and a warrant in this case.

It's not clear if the charges will be for the 8th grade suspect, her mother, or both.

The stabbing victim was treated at a local hospital for her injuries and is now back home with her family.

Other circumstances leading up to the attack have not been released by authorities, as the investigation continues.
