(WWJ) An active shooter situation unfolded at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital at M-59 and Dequindre, with officers able to capture the suspect just before 10 a.m., hours after he went on the lam in an incident that caused lockdowns -- and fear -- among hospital patients and local residents.
The victim, a 25-year-old man, is in stable condition.
People on the scene are told WWJ the shooter and victim were both employees of the hospital, and the shooting took place in the parking garage. The victim was reportedly hit twice in the arm.
"One victim is in the emergency department for medical treatment. Patients with services scheduled should not come to the hospital at this time. Patients may call the department where they were scheduled for service directly," a spokesperson for Corewell Health shared.
Police held a press conference at 9:15 a.m. where they revealed the victim was able to identify the shooter. Search teams have spread out across the area. For hours, police said the suspect was not in custody, but also not believed to be inside the hospital any longer. They were finally able to capture him near 21 Mile and Heydenreich and he was taken into custody, reportedly without incident.
"We're there, we're on the scene. We're doing our best to keep you safe," police said, adding "We know who we're looking for."
Several drivers in the area say they've seen more than a dozen police cars at the hospital.
An alert that went out to residents in the area around 7:30 this morning said people should avoid the area and shelter in place.
Doctors and other workers who were not at the hospital were told to say away from the area until the all clear has been signaled.
