CHEBOYGAN (WWJ) Staff at a Northern Michigan motel discovered a grinning alligator while cleaning one of the rooms, police said.

Cheboygan Police said they responded to the Pine River Motel on Friday, March 14th, on the report of an alligator found in one of the motel rooms after the occupant had checked out.

Lieutenant White arrived on scene, and staff directed him to the room where Wally, the alligator, was left behind. Further investigation revealed his owner was visiting town with Wally and Wally's siblings (other exotic animals) to do wildlife presentations for elementary school children, police said.

Lt. White was able to identify Wally's owner and contact him via phone. The owner told police that Wally had gone missing, but did not know where or when. He said he would be back as soon as possible to pick up the gator, according to police.

Wally hung out in the motel room until his owner arrived. Officers Spray and Duvall reunited Wally with his owner.

Cheboygan County Animal Control assisted at the scene, and the staff at Bishop Baraga Catholic School helped with the investigation.

Wally has officially checked out of the Pine River Motel.
