JACKSON COUNTY (WWJ) - A freight train that came off the track near Jackson is causing delays for Amtrak passengers Thursday morning, officials said.

The company first tweeted about the incident around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, saying the Wolverine Train 354 was stopped at the Jackson station due to a freight train derailment just east of the city.

According to Amtrak, the affected train was blocking the tracks, making passage impossible.

Around 11:20 p.m., Amtrak said alternate bus transportation would be provided to guests impacted by the delays.

One rider wrote on social media that they had been waiting for transportation since 10:20 p.m. and that a bus may be available after midnight.

A few hours later, Amtrak said the Wolverine Train 351 that was scheduled for Thursday will originate at Jackson as the derailed train was still blocking the tracks.

"Wolverine Train 351 customers between Pontiac (PNT) and Jackson (JXN) can now rebook for Train 353," the company said in an update just after 7 a.m. on Thursday.

WWJ has a call into the Jackson County Sheriff's Office about the derailment.

Further details about the incident are unknown at this time.
