Amtrak train hits, kills pedestrian on tracks in Ypsilanti's Depot Town neighborhood; Police investigating

YPSILANTI (WWJ) – One person is dead after being hit by an Amtrak passenger train in Ypsilanti Thursday night.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. in the Depot Town neighborhood near the intersection of Cross and River Streets, a Huron Valley Ambulance spokesperson told WWJ.

Amtrak officials said Amtrak Train 352 was traveling from Chicago to Pontiac with 76 passengers and crew on board at the time of the incident.

Amtrak officials said “an individual who was trespassing on the track came into contact with the train. The company is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.

It was not immediately clear what led up to the incident.

HVA officials said they received the call at 8:03 p.m. and a paramedic on-scene declared the victim dead at 8:10 p.m.

The HVA spokesperson could not confirm any information about the victim. Police did not immediately provide any information regarding the incident.

In a statement regarding the incident, Amtrak said:

“According to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), trespassing along railroad rights-of-way is the leading cause of rail-related deaths in America, and railroad crossing incidents are the second leading cause of rail-related deaths in America… For more railroad safety information, please visit StayOffTheTracks.org.”
