ANN ARBOR (WWJ) Ann Arbor Police are searching for three suspects in a robbery and assault that ended with a gun discharging steps away from the University of Michigan campus.
In a statement; U of M Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) said they learned via Ann Arbor Police of the off-campus assault that occurred on East William at Maynard—near the U of M Museum of Art and a number of academic buildings including Tisch, Angel, Mason and Haven Halls.
Police said the victim reported seeing three suspects stealing items from his car—including a handgun. When the victim tried to thwart the robbery and get his gun back, it discharged and injured him.
No information was released about his condition or his connection to the university, if any.
DPSS posted the update on the "ongoing investigation" on Sunday, December 15th at 7:25 a.m., but did not specify what time it happened.
The suspects fled in a silver SUV, police said. No details were released about their identities.
According to Ann Arbor Police, this appears to be an "isolated incident" with "no ongoing threat to the community."
