GROVELAND TWP. (WWJ) – An armed man who prompted a barricaded situation in a wooded area in Oakland County on Thursday evening took his own life despite efforts from state police to bring the incident to a peaceful end.
In an update posted to Michigan State Police's Twitter page overnight, troopers said the man was found by authorities in a wooded area in Groveland Township several hours after the incident began and was taken to Genesys Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The cause of death was determined to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, MSP added. Authorities said troopers discovered a 9mm handgun at the scene.
The scene was cleared shortly before 2 a.m.
"Please remember you are not alone," MSP continued in their update. "There are many people to help you such a clergy, police and medical staff. You can also call 988 and speak to someone at the Crisis help line."
According to state police, authorities were first called to the area around 6:30 p.m. on the report of a car in the ditch on Grange Hall near Perryville Road. When the trooper showed up, he found the vehicle’s driver had run into the woods nearby.
The driver yelled to the trooper that he was hurt, but he was armed with a gun and that he may possibly want to hurt himself further. Troopers and sergeants then worked with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department and treated the situation as a barricaded gunman.
Authorities set up a perimeter around the area, with special response teams and canine units on-scene, as well as an aviation unit above.
Residents and drivers were asked to avoid the area and to expect a large police response. Nearby Brandon High School was reportedly on lockdown during evening activities and parents have not been able to pick up their students, according to a WWJ tipster although police did not confirm.
