PORT HURON TWP. (WWJ) -- A man involved in a fight with his family near Port Huron has died after he was shot by a Michigan State Police trooper.

Authorities said the 52-year old gunman came out of a house Wednesday night, confronting St. Clair County deputies and MSP troopers.

"When officers arrived on scene, the man exited the home with a gun in his hand and was uncooperative, making threats and refusing multiple commands from officers to drop the gun," according to a news release by the MSP.

A trooper then opened fire, shooting armed man. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

State Police said troopers had responded to the home, in the 000 block of Dove Road in Port Huron Twp., after family members called 911 to report a domestic violence incident.

The trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on leave, which is typical for any shooting.

No names are being released at this time, as the investigation continues.

"Any loss of life during any police encounter is tragic," MSP said. "All incidents that involve a trooper discharging their firearm are immediately investigated. As such, the MSP 2nd District Special Investigation Section and Northville MSP Crime Lab responded to the scene and are conducting a thorough investigation. In accordance with policy, the trooper involved have been placed on leave."

Once the investigation is complete, MSP said all of the information, along with video evidence, will be turned over to the Michigan Attorney General's Office.
