DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit fire officials has closed a portion of Gratiot in Detroit after a fire broke out at a furniture warehouse early Tuesday morning.
WWJ's Charlie Langton said smoke could be seen rising from Furniture Warehouse located near the intersection of Gratiot and Lappin as crews battled to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings.
Detroit Fire Chief James Harris provided an update around 9 a.m. and said the flames, which was deemed a 2-alarm fire, had been contained by fire crews.
"Today we have a commercial furniture store in the 14000 block of Gratiot on the east side. We got this call apporximently 7:45 this morning. Fortunately, nobody was in the building and we've contained it to just this commercial building," Harris told Langton. "Nobody was inside and it's looking good right now."
Langton reported at least 40 firefighters were at the scene, blocking off the northbound side of Gratiot.
"Still lots of smoke, you can smell it in air," Langton said.
No injures were reported and officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
