MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) -- More than half-a-dozen baby rabbits are being cared for at a Macomb County animal shelter after they were rescued by a Good Samaritan and a sheriff's deputy.
According to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office, the little bunnies were found in a bag that was thrown out of a car window onto the side of the road, in a neighborhood near Romeo Plank and M-59 Monday evening.
The investigation began at around 7 p.m. when a call came in from a witness who said they saw someone throw a plastic bag out of a car window, and that the bag contained baby rabbits.
A responding sheriff's deputy found that the bag was tied in multiple knots, with an air-right seal, so she used a key to poke a hole in the bag to allow the rabbits to breathe.
The rabbits were taken to the Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) in Romeo.
Unfortunately, one of the rabbits in the bag had already died.
DAWG Director Kelly LaBonty estimated the rabbits were approximately one to two weeks old, and wouldn't be able to survive without their mother or rehabilitation efforts.
The sheriff's office said Thursday that it is looking for the person who threw the rabbits.
The suspect is described as a younger to middle-aged man, driving a smaller, red Chevy car. The witness said he had seen this man in the area before.
“The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office takes situations of animal abuse and mistreatment very seriously,” said Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, in a statement. “I commend Deputy Taylor Dibble for diligently answering the call and giving these animals a chance at life.”
Anyone who may know the suspect, or who has any information about this case, should call the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office at 586-469-5151.
