DETROIT (WWJ) -- After negotiating with a barricaded gunman for over seven hours on the city's east side, Detroit police were able to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion.

According to DPD Deputy Chief Franklin Hayes, officers were alerted to a violent person in the 4800 block of Maryland at E. Warren around 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Investigators followed up on the report and spoke to the family of the man in question. Relatives told investigators that the man had a history of mental illness and that he had started exhibiting violent behavior toward them earlier in the day.

When they were unable to calm him, the family requested police assistance.

Further investigation revealed the man was in possession of a firearm.

Just after 1:30 p.m. -- when the man refused to come out of the home -- DPD enacted their barricaded person protocol, set up a perimeter and called in a Special Response Team and crisis negotiators.

Over 7 hours after the ordeal began, the man finally surrendered without further incident.

Deputy Chief Hayes thanked the local community for their patience during the standoff and assured residents that the man had been transported to an area hospital where he could receive the proper mental health care.

No one was injured during the barricade situation.
