ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) -- Enjoy the outdoors, but don’t take a dip in the lake at Memorial Park this weekend.
The beach at the Macomb County park in St. Clair Shores is closed today for swimming because the lake has tested with E. coli levels that are too high to be safe.
The park and swimming pool remain open to the public, and it is not clear how long the lake closure will last.
The Macomb County Health Department has been continuing its beach water monitoring program throughout 2021.
Macomb County Health officer Andrew Cox tells WWJ it’s best to avoid lake swimming in the 24 hours following heavy rains, as higher levels of run-off water are present at that time.
Beaches that are included in the monitoring program include Lake St. Clair Metropark Beach in Harrison Township, Walter & Mary Burke Park in New Baltimore, Memorial Park Beach in St. Clair Shores, Stony Creek Baypoint Beach in Washington Township and Stony Creek Eastwood Beach in Shelby Township.
Only Memorial Park Beach has been closed so far during this season.
