DETROIT (WWJ) - A popular Midtown restaurant in the center of Detroit's art and food scene is closing after serving as a creative place for artists and the community to gather for almost 30 years.
Owner Chuck Roy told the Detroit News that he plans to close Cass Café in Midtown on July 17 after operating the restaurant for nearly three decades.
Roy said he's ready to retire.
"Anything is on the table," he said when asked what the future holds for the cafe. Roy made the decision after considering the slower summer months and the current, difficult climate for eateries.
Roy first opened the Cass Café 29 years ago along Cass Ave. near Forest. He said he and his wife, Diane, first opened the establishment as a place to feature local artists while providing a relaxed atmosphere for the community to come together.
"Our vision was to create a laid back environment through which you can embrace all things Detroit," the owners said. "No TV's. Just art."
Cass Cafe's doors will close in 10 days, manager Meghaen Tebo confirmed.
"It's definitely a bit of a bummer, this is a cool spot for all of us to hang out," she said to The Detroit News. "People always ask where to go (in Detroit) and we always just hang out here, even though we work here."
Tebo said the next week and a half may be "interesting" as people stop to get their last meal or look at the popular café.
"There's going to be definitely once people actually believe or realize (we're closing), we might see some old faces, which will be cool," she said.
The Cass Cafe at 4620 Cass in Detroit is open now through July 17. To learn more, you can visit casscafe.com or call (313) 831-1400.
