OAKLAND COUNTY (WWJ) — Fire crews from multiple departments who raced to put out building fire that broke out at Greek Islands Coney in downtown Birmingham early Thursday morning said the fire is now extinguished.
According to fire officials, the fire was first reported around 8:20 a.m. at the restaurant near Hamilton Row and Ferndale Ave.
WWJ's Charlie Langton was at scene earlier Thursday morning where and firefighters were concentrating efforts on the roof of the building.
"When I arrived first and I saw that three to four foot flames were coming out of the roof, it appeared to be coming out of the vent stack from the hood suppression system," said Birmingham Fire Marshall Jack Pesha said WWJ's Charlie Langton.
Firefighters from Birmingham were assisted by additional crews from Bloomfield Hills and Royal Oak Fire Departments.
Pesha said the building had heavy smoke and they evacuated one employee who was found trying to extinguish the flames inside the restaurant.
Luckily, Greek Islands Coney was closed at the time and there were no injuries reported.
Pesha said damage was sustained to the inside and outside of building.
Traffic in the downtown areas was tied up for several hours as crews worked to put out the flames.
The fire marshall said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
