SOUTHEAST MI (WWJ) - Feel like you're seeing a lot of blue this Monday? Then the point has been made.
"Blue Monday" is the kick off to International Men's Health Week, taking place June 12-18, 2023. Many people wear the color, often associated with the male gender, to bring attention to men's health in Michigan and around the world.
MIU Men’s Health Foundation advocates for men’s health and prostate cancer survivorship through its signature fundraising events this June.
"We're trying to bring attention to that and trying to find ways to bring men's health to the forefront," Dr. Michael Lutz urologist and president of the MIU Men's Health Foundation told WWJ. "Tell men to live healthier lives, to be more health forward, more health conscious and trying to seek out more health opportunities."
According to the foundation's website, the goal is to empower men to take control of their health so they are educated and equipped to ‘Fight Like a Man’.
"Men's health, in general, has been ignored. And the reason it's been ignored is because a lot of times, men don't seek help themselves," Lutz added.
"Since COVID and pandemic, there's been a significant decline in the overall survivorship for men as a result of the COVID pandemic and the health disparities have occurred as a result of that."
A series of events are planned over the days, hoping to continue the conversation.
“The key to prostate cancer survival is early detection,” said Lutz in a written statement. “We need to reach as many men as possible – and the partners and families who care about them – so we can save more lives, while raising funds that support survivorship and other programs all year long.”
The week kicks off on June 12 (known internationally as Blue Monday) with its annual cycling event Cogs & Kegs, continues with the Run for the Ribbon Pre-Run Celebration at Top Golf on Thursday and ends Sunday, June 18, with the signature Run for the Ribbon at the Detroit Zoo on Father’s Day.
Cogs and Kegs takes place at Griffin Claw in Birmingham Monday at 6:30 p.m. There will be a ten-mile and a 30-mile ride.
