DETROIT (WWJ) — Bridge preservation work will force a weekend closure on northbound I-75 in southwest Detroit beginning Friday night.

Weather permitting, crews will close northbound I-75 from Schaefer Highway to Springwells Street starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18. The freeway is scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20.

The closure is required so workers can apply a protective surface coating to four bridges, a process designed to lengthen the service life of the structures.

During the closure, northbound I-75 traffic will be detoured via northbound I-275, eastbound I-94, and eastbound I-96 back to northbound I-75. Local drivers can use M-85 (Fort Street) as an alternate route.

In addition to the main freeway closure, several entrance ramps to northbound I-75 will close beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. The affected ramps include M-39 (Southfield Road), Outer Drive, Schaefer Highway, Dearborn Street, and Springwells Street.
