
SAUGATUCK, Mich. (WWJ) – An elderly woman has been rescued from Lake Michigan after having a medical emergency at a popular West Michigan beach on Tuesday.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office was called to Oval Beach in Saugatuck Tuesday afternoon on the report of a possible drowning.
When first responders arrived, they discovered civilians at the beach had already jumped into action to save the 78-year-old woman, who had fallen into the water off a kayak or paddleboard, due to a medical emergency, according to a report from WOOD TV in Grand Rapids.
Bystanders pulled her out of the water and were already performing CPR when officers arrived at the beach. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Her condition was not known, as of Tuesday evening.
Authorities have not released many details about the incident, including the nature of the medical incident or her hometown.
It was not clear how many civilians jumped in to help her.
Oval Beach is a popular tourist destination in Saugatuck, a small resort town about 40 miles southwest of Grand Rapids.
