DETROIT (WWJ) - Ice skaters have until the end of the week to make their last passes on the rink at Downtown Detroit's Campus Martius before it closes for the season, officials announced.
Officials said the rink will be open every day for skaters from now until March, 5 — it will then close until the holiday season starts again in November of 2023.
Michigan State University students are welcome to use the rink at no cost in the wake of the deadly mass shooting at the East Lansing Campus earlier in the month.
All current MSU students with a valid student ID can skate at no charge.
The rink's remaining hours of operation are as follows:
• Tuesday, Feb. 28: 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
• Wednesday, March 1: 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
• Thursday, March 2: 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
• Friday, March 3: 11 a.m.-11 p.m.
• Saturday, March 4: 10 a.m.-11 p.m.
• Sunday, March 5: Noon-8 p.m.
Admission costs $12 for adults, $9 for children 12 years and under and for seniors 59 years and older, and $8 for active military members and first responders.
Guests who need skates can rent them for $6.
At the start of the holidays when the colder weather sets in, officials set up the rink at Campus Martius Park were tens of thousands of people gather for an opening ceremony, including a Christmas tree lighting, to kick off the season.
In recent years, a menorah lighting to celebrate Hanukkah and a kinara lighting to celebrate Kwanza were also added to the park's wintertime festivities.
USA Today named Campus Martius as the best public square in the nation in their 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Award Contest.
