The Springfield Township fire chief said it appeared that the candle fell over in a bedroom of the 9,000 sq. ft. home on Ely Road near I-75 and Davisburg Road.

Firefighters from eight departments were called in to assist in fighting the 2-alarm massive fire in Northern Oakland County, which was reported at approximately 8:37 a.m.

Some lower-level bedrooms and a deck suffered the most severe damage, although the entire house is unlivable because of smoke.

The family and pets were able to get out safely after they were alerted by smoke detectors.

No injuries have been reported.

The chief said smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are a necessity in homes and if any homeowner needs one they should contact the department and they will install them, if needed.

The fire departments who helped fight the fire included the North Oakland Fire Authority, White Lake, Groveland Township, Independence Township, Highland Township, Fenton Township and Holly.
