SANDUSKY, OH (WWJ) -- There's a lot of online chatter about safety at Cedar Point after a couple of scary incidents in recent weeks.

Power Tower -- the one that takes you up, and drops you down -- is temporarily closed after a cable on one of the ride's towers detached from the ride cart during operation on Sunday.

A Cedar Point spokesperson said the ride's safety system worked as normal and brought the cart to the loading position. Nobody was hurt, but the Ohio Department of Agriculture is investigating.

Power Tower launches riders 240 feet in the air, with speeds up to 60 miles per hour.

Officials said the ride, which first opened in 1998, will remain closed while the park completes a thorough review and inspects the ride.

This isn't the only ride at Cedar Point that's seen some trouble lately. The park's newest addition, record-breaking tilt coaster Siren's Curse, has been forced to close five times this summer due to mechanical issues.

In July, video went viral after the ride stopped and riders were forced to walk down the 160-foot-high tracks.

While it is expected for roller coasters to break down from time to time, these incidents have led to social media discourse about whether it's still safe to ride the rides at Cedar Point. Some suggest that the popular amusement park has been on the decline since its owner, Cedar Fair, merged with the larger Six Flags in 2024.

The Cedar Point spokesman says safety remains their top priority.

Meanwhile, Cedar Point’s annual HalloWeekends event is right around the corner, and the park says it's now hiring for all fall positions with most starting at $20 hour. Potential applicants can attend Cedar Point’s Fall Hiring Event, scheduled for Aug. 18-20 from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Get details or apply at this link.
