Chance of snow today in metro Detroit; Up to 4 inches in parts of Michigan

(WWJ) Ready or not, metro Detroit may very well see its first snowflakes of the season today.

"We'll go back and forth with some clouds and some sunny breaks on a very chilly, brisk afternoon," said WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologists Dean DeVore. "Then we'll have some rain... and even some wet snow showers."

While the snow is not expected to accumulate, it could make for some tricky travel. Drivers should watch out for slick spots on the roads, particularly in areas west of the city of Detroit, in the afternoon and evening.

DeVore said the best chance for snow will be in the western suburbs. "A rain or snow shower could keep coming off Lake Michigan, especially west of us (there) will be a freeze if there is a rain or snow shower... and it could be slippery," as temperatures fall below freezing down to around 30 degrees in metro Detroit Tuesday night, he said.

Meanwhile, sticking snow is falling in Northern Michigan... with big, fluffy flakes reported by visitors to Traverse City.

Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 2 p.m. Tuesday for northern lower Michigan with up to 4 inches of snow expected to accumulate in the region.

The National Weather Service said areas expected to see the most accumulating snow include Antrim, Otsego, Montmorency, Kalkaska, Crawford and Oscoda counties.

In Gaylord, NWS forecasters it was "a winter wonderland" up there by late-morning. Forecasters posted a photo of what they deemed the city's "first snowman of the year."

In west Michigan, showers with a mix of rain and snow are expected to continue for the next couple of days, through Thursday morning. "Temperatures away from Lake Michigan should dip below freezing tonight, and some snow showers could put down light accumulations," NWS forecasters in the Grand Rapids area said, before milder air returns toward the end of the week.

Remarking on Gaylord's snowman, forecasters said they wouldn't be surprised if southwest Michiganders will be able to make their own by Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, the snow is piling up in the Upper Peninsula, where NWS has reported total accumulations up to 7.7'' by Tuesday morning.
