PONTIAC (WWJ) A man with previous convictions is in custody for the deadly shooting of a young Pontiac man, sheriff's officials said.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said the shooting happened on Crystal Lake Drive, in the area of Franklin and South Boulevard, on Saturday, April 11, around 2:15 p.m.
According to authorities, the suspect shot and killed the victim during a robbery.
Deputies arrived to find the victim lying in a driveway with a gunshot wound to his back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office identified him as Kevonte Javon Smith, 28.
Witnesses said the suspect ran away after the shooting. A K9 unit and drones helped search the area.
Deputies with the Sheriff's Office Directed Patrol Unit arrested the Pontiac man, 36. He was on probation for a drug conviction and had served prison time for an unarmed robbery conviction in 2016, according to authorities.
Detectives also recovered the gun and the clothes the suspect allegedly wore at the time of the shooting.
According to authorities, the suspect and victim knew each other. The Sheriff's Office said it expects to hand over the results of its investigation to prosecutors within a few days.
"It's so sad to see when lives are lost for absolutely no reason," Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. "We look forward to this individual being held to account for the suspected violent homicide."
