DETROIT (WWJ) -- While mystery still shrouds the murder of a well-known neurosurgeon in his sprawling Detroit mansion, it is not a cold case.

That's according Detroit's police chief, who said he is hoping to close this high-profile homicide case "very soon" — and possibly within the next month.

Speaking to Detroit Board of Police Commissioners, Chief James White said a team of investigators is working through a list of things needed by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office to bring charges against a suspect in the death of Dr. Devon Hoover, who was found fatally shot in his Boston-Edison District home back in April.

"We have an active team of investigators that are very active with the prosecutor's office," White said, Thursday afternoon.

"We are confident that we should be able to bring some closure to this family, very, very soon. And we expect to have an announcement soon. I'm hopeful that it's before the end of the year."

White did not offer any details about the suspect.

This update comes months after the DPD arrested a "person of interest" on an unrelated charge. That unnamed person was eventually released, and no charges were filed in connection with Hoover's death.

Hoover, who worked at Ascension Healthcare at St. John Hospital in Detroit, was found dead in the attic of his home on April 23, 2023. Officials said the 53-year-old's body was wrapped in a sheet, and an autopsy concluded that he'd suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his head.

Authorities have not discussed a possible motive for the slaying, but White said investigators do believe the doctor knew his killer, and that this was not the result of a home break-in or a random act.

Addressing another high-profile case on Thursday, the chief also said the investigation into the death of synagogue president Samantha Woll is moving forward, but they have no suspects at this time. He said there are a number of people who have not been ruled out as suspects at this point.

Woll was found stabbed to death outside her east side home nearly two weeks ago.
