DETROIT (WWJ) -- Police have a "person of interest" in custody in connection with the slaying of a neurosurgeon who was found fatally shot in his mansion in a historic Detroit neighborhood.

The Detroit Police Department said officers discovered the body of Dr. Devon Hoover in the attic on Sunday, while conducting a welfare check at the home in the 100 block of W. Boston Blvd., near Woodward Ave., in the city's Boston Edison Historic District.

Hoover's body had been wrapped up in a blanket or in plastic, according to police sources, and the death was ruled a homicide.

Medical examiners have since confirmed that the 53-year-old doctor had been shot in the head multiple times.

While there have been no charges yet filed in the case, Detroit Police Chief James White said a "person of interest" was taken into custody shortly after midnight Thursday on an unrelated charge.

And investigators, White noted, do believe that Dr. Hoover knew his killer.

"We have no reason to believe that the community is in any danger, or at any risk. This was not a random act," White said.

"Again, that's preliminary," the chief added. "But we are still actively working the investigation, but we're confident that no other residents are at risk, and that was not an incident where the victim's home was broken into, and this act was random. Everything we have points to them knowing each other."

White stressed, however, that the investigation is ongoing.

The name of the person in custody, and details concerning his or her relationship to Dr. Hoover, have not yet been released.

Hoover was employed by Ascension Michigan, where he worked as a neurosurgeon, with 20 years of experience and a special interest in back and neck disorders.

Memorial services for Hoover are scheduled for this weekend.
