WOODHAVEN (WWJ) – Many dog rescues across Metro Detroit are struggling to care for their dogs with rising inflation, but there’s a way you can help.
ChiHaven of Michigan focuses on chihuahuas and other dogs “that may not make it out of shelters otherwise,” according to Leanna Sikes. ChiHaven and Last Stop Rescue and Sanctuary are hosting an event Tuesday night to help their dogs – mainly seniors and dogs with behavior issues.
WWJ’s Erin Vee spoke with Sikes about the Halloween fundraiser at Sneaky’s Bar in Woodhaven, which will feature baked goods, food, 50/50 and mystery raffles, a costume contest and even a vampire and her “werewolf,” aka her dog.
The event runs from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday at Sneaky’s and all proceeds will be split evenly between the two rescue groups for their vet bills, as well as items needed for the care of the animals.
Like most things these days, Sikes says care for rescue animals has gone “way up,” including vet and medicine costs, and of course food.
“Dog food has almost doubled and so has the price of human food and a lot of our dogs are seniors, and a lot of them are in hospice and we do cook for them.”
She says thankfully, ChiHaven has a good support system and vets who are willing to work with them.
