MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) – A Macomb County man accused of fatally shooting his wife while she was on the phone with police has been charged with first-degree murder.
Steven Wheeler of Clinton Township was arraigned Monday and denied bond. He was also charged with one count of felony firearm.
The charges stem from an alleged shooting last Thursday night at their home in Clinton Township.
The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office says Wheeler, 30, got into an argument with his wife that night. Police officials said last week she called 911 around 9 p.m. and asked for police to come because her husband was assaulting her.
Authorities say while she was on the phone with the 911 operator, Wheeler allegedly opened fire and shot her multiple times.
WWJ's Charlie Langton reported last week the couple's young children were home at the time of the shooting. The prosecutor's office did not release any information about the children.
"We will seek justice for this victim and hope that those affected by domestic violence do not suffer in silence. Let us strive to create a community where every home is a safe place," Prosecutor Peter Lucid said, per a press release.
Wheeler's next court date is scheduled for Nov. 6.
The shooting last Thursday marked the third high-profile domestic violence investigation that week, as a nursing student from Macomb Township and a retired Genesee County Sheriff's Office secretary both lost their lives in domestic violence incidents within a week's time.
