'You might need the winter coat along with the costume': Cold Halloween temps — and possibly snowflakes — expected in Metro Detroit

(WWJ) – We’ve seen a late-October “heat wave” of sorts in Metro Detroit this week, but don’t expect it to stick around for Halloween next Tuesday.

After temps reached the mid-70s on Tuesday, AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Thompson says Friday’s high temperatures may come close to the record high of 78, set all the way back in 1927.

That type of heat this late in the year is not “terribly uncommon,” according to Thompson. But something that sure seems to be a lot more common for Michiganders this time of year is what’s on its way behind this warmth.

A cold front is expected to move through late Friday, knocking the temperatures down to the upper 50s Saturday, and high temps could “struggle to get above 50” on Sunday, according to Thompson.

“It looks even chillier as we get into the early part of next week,” Thompson said on this week’s Weather Wednesday segment.

“It is gonna be cold on Halloween. Too bad we can’t hold some of this weather over until next week,” he said.

The good news, according to Thompson, is Halloween looks to be mostly dry. But the bad news is Tuesday’s high is likely to be in the mid-40s.

And things may even drop into the 30s by the time for trick-or-treating, he added.

“It looks mainly dry. If there is anything, it looks pretty light. There might be a sprinkle, maybe a flurry — it might be cold enough to talk about that,” Thompson said. “Unfortunately, one of those years where you might need the winter coat along with the costume.”

While we prepare for chilly temps and possibly snowflakes in the Midwest, some parts of the Western U.S. are already seeing heavy snowfall.
