WARREN (WWJ) — Two suspects, one of which has previous felony convictions, were taken into custody on Monday afternoon after a police chase escalated into shots fired in Warren.
According to Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer, at around 1:30 p.m. Warren officers were in pursuit of a wanted 2020 Chevy Malibu on eastbound 8 Mile Rd. near Mound Rd. when the suspects crashed into another vehicle.
Police said a man and a woman both got out of the Malibu and attempted to run from the scene.
A man who jumped out of the car ran west on 8 Mile, then headed south on a side street. As officers followed, they noticed the man was armed with a handgun in his right hand.
At one point during the foot chase, the man turned back and pointed his handgun at officers.
"Upon being faced with this threat, an officer fired several shots at the suspect," the Warren Police Department said in a prepared statement.
The man continued to run, but was eventually tracked down by a K9 unit.
"The male suspect was uninjured and taken into custody without further incident. Investigators recovered the suspect's gun wherein it was seized for processing," the department continued. "Investigators are working to confirm if the suspect did in fact fire shots at the officers involved."
The woman was found and arrested in Detroit shortly after.
Warren police identified the male suspect as a 28-year-old resident of Detroit with previous felony convictions. He is currently awaiting trial in Wayne County for fleeing and eluding police and carjacking and was out on a personal bond at the time of the incident.
Dwyer expressed his frustration in a prepared statement and called on lawmakers and judges to "work together to keep violent suspect behind bars while their case is pending."
"We are very fortunate that an officer was not seriously injured or killed as a result of the suspect’s violent actions," the commissioner said. "Sadly, these incidents are occurring more often with officers being at high risk every time they put on their uniform. This suspect is a convicted felon, was clearly armed, and was given a personal bond for a carjacking case which is an insult to the men and women in women in blue."
Dwyer said the case is still under investigation. Once complete, the findings will be handed over to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
